EV Charging Port

Residents considering the purchase of electric vehicles need to have their own electric vehicle charging station at home to refuel and recharge. These charging stations can ensure there is an adequate charge for the car, providing a quick charge within hours or overnight charging and enough power for long journeys. Before installing an electric car charging port, it’s important to have a checkup of your electrical system conducted by a qualified electrician who can perform the checkup and installation.

Our experienced and licensed electricians can tell you about your electrical system. They can also tell if your garage or parking area meets the required standard. This is important information to know before adding a large electrical appliance, like a car, to your home’s network.

Electric vehicle charging station options

When driving an electric vehicle, you want to leave your home on a full charge. How long it takes to reach this full charge with your home charging solution depends on which option you choose.

  • Level 1 chargers run off of standard 120-volt AC current and as such are compatible with the wiring in your home or office. They’re easy to install and extremely affordable. Their one big drawback is that they can take up to 12 hours to recharge an average electric vehicle.
  • Level 2 chargers also run off standard AC electrical system in your home or office but charge at 240 volts rather than 120 volts like the level 1 charger. Because of this, they can charge the battery in an average electric vehicle in 3 to 5 hours rather than 12 hours.
  • Level 3 chargers are DC Fast Chargers. They’re generally a quick, and efficient way to charge your electric vehicle when you are on a longer trip. If there’s a drawback to this type of charger it’s the cost, which can be prohibitive for many homeowners in particular.
  • Level 4 charger is a Tesla product intended to be used solely with Tesla electric vehicles. As such, the major drawback of this type of charger is compatibility because with level 4 it’s Tesla or nothing.

Electric vehicle charger comparisons

Three of the 4 levels have easily identifiable drawbacks: level 1 speed, level 3 price, and level 4 compatibility,

Level 2 is typically 2 to 3 times faster than level 1 chargers. It uses AC current so you don’t need an adapter. Plus, it is widely compatible with a number of different brands of electric cars and is affordable.

No matter which one you choose, Klotz Electric, LLC. can provide an efficient, safe and affordable electric vehicle car charging port installation.
