Electric switch and outlet installation, repair, and inspection

The switches and outlets in your home are the gateways between you and your home’s electric. They help you turn lights on and off and plug in your electronics. Electric switch and outlet installation projects can increase the functionality of light, ventilate and power appliances.

However, most major appliances, like a dryer or stove, require a dedicated outlet. The NEC (national electric code) requires GCFI-protection for all receptacles in a moisture-prone area, like a kitchen or bathroom

3 types of outlet installation options

  • Standard outlets – typically 15-amp duplex outlets. This design has been standard in American homes since the 1960s. Each of the two outlets has a long (neutral) slot, a shorter (hot) slot.
  • AFCI (arc fault circuit interrupter) outlets – provide protection against dangerous overheating that could occur between plugs and the outlet. As this heat could initiate an electrical fire, the Code requires them as a safety precaution.
  • Tamper-resistant outlets – won’t open unless a two-prong plug is evenly inserted into the outlet in the right way. This prevents children from sticking troubling things like forks or hairpins in them.

5 types of electric light switch choices

  • One-way (single pole) electrical switch is the most common one in use. They control lights, fans, or other devices from a single location.
  • Two-way (double-pole) electrical switch controls a device or equipment from more than one location.
  • Do not disturb switch is a soft touch operating switch mostly used in hospitals and hotels to ensure privacy and silence.
  • Light dimmer/stepless regulator controls or changes the speed of a fan or sometimes to change the intensity of a light between bright and dim.
  • Bell push switch is connected to a doorbell and rings the bell connected to it. It is used in homes and offices, etc. A Bell Push switch maintains a broken circuit unless the button is pressed
